Hi,
Me and a few friends are going camping, the place we are going to is at least 10 miles from the nearest town, so it’s quite rugged and out of the way. The way we are getting there would be by train and then by bus. Obviously we are taking a knife, but is this legal?
Cheers
i walk around with a hatchet, a decent blade, and an air rifle along a mani road and Police don’t even stop and ask where i live.

lol, if your taking knives for food prep then yeah i guess so, people use knives for cooking all the time, just if your taking a knife that is blatantly not for cooking i wouldnt be too sure mate

Depends on you age I think, but it should be legal.

your answer is how you carry the knife. It should be in your bag and out of sight of the public.
It also seem to matter how old you are and the maturity of the group. If stopped and you are carrying the knife in your pocket or sheath in public then you may be stopped and prosecuted if you have not a good reason for carrying it in that area. if you have it you r bag packed away then no one will see it until you get to camp.

I spend time in the outdoor and had to prove the reason why I had a knife in my bag.

You can buy and take a legal knife with you – short blade, 4" or less, and either folding or a fixed blade. When you are carrying it, make sure it is in your bag, and not easily accessible. The argument for prosecuting you might be that you were carrying the knife as a weapon – if you have to take the bag off, unpack half of it to find the knife before you can use it in anger then you can argue that you are not using it as a weapon (to be honest, anyone you were being aggressive to is not going to hang around too long you see)
Cooking knives are good too – a pairing knife would be OK to take – get one from Lakelands with a plastic cover on.
Last thing to consider here is why do you need a knife – what are you planning to do with it? Cooking and you probably need one, but before you take one consider if you actually need it with you

Should be OK as long as it is not a fixed blade and is less than 4" long. Also depends on your age. For under 18s, Victorinox have teamed up with the Duke of Edinburgh to make a knife that is legal for them to use on camping expeditions.

As others have said, avoid a knife which may be taken to be a weapon & pack it away in transit.
In addition to legal issues, large knives are not a useful as they seem. For any non-cooking task where a blade longer than 10cm is needed, a hand axe (hatchet) or folding saw will probably be a more efficient tool, especially for cutting wood.
I’ve replaced my old sheath knife with an Opinel lock-knife with a 10cm blade and a folding saw (a 25cm saw blade which folds inside it’s handle like a giant penknife). The saw is far more effective than a knife for cutting wood, clearing bramble, etc, and does not disturb policemen.
