Some people prefer a fixed-blade knife. The idea is that if there is an unexpected emergency, a strong fixed-blade knife can be used to chop and split (baton) wood or bone (i.e., when dressing game), or tied to a stick to make a spear. The disadvantage is these knives are large and heavy, making them less comfortable to carry or to work with when whittling or carving. The "Short Ka-Bar" knife from Ka-Bar would be a good example this knife and is close to your price range.

Some people prefer a folding knife. Some folding knives are large and strong enough to be used for light chopping and batoning in a crisis, yet still fit into a pocket or clip easily to your belt. There’s several great knives in this category, my favorites in your price range would be the Spyderco Tenacious G-10 (plain edge) and the Kershaw Ken Onion Black Blur Folding Knife (plain edge).

In my opinion, a Swiss Army Knife is an ideal camping knife. Aside from its very sharp blade, implements such as scissors, toothpick, tweezers, can opener, even eyeglass-size screwdriver, see a good deal of use at camp and along the trail. Yet these knives can be very small and lightweight, making them easy to carry in your pocket. My favorite is the Victorinox Swiss Army Compact; it is only two layers thick so rides in my pocket comfortably, yet it has all the implements one might want at your campsite or on the trail. The only disadvantages might be that the knife blade does not lock and can’t be opened one-handed, and of course it could not be used for chopping or batoning.

Many people use a multi-tool while camping. Multi-tools are a heavier-duty, and usually larger variation of the Swiss Army Knife. Most multi-tools lack implements such as tweezers and toothpicks, (which I find surprisingly useful at camp), but add pliers, wire cutters/strippers and several screwdriver blades. Multi-tools tend to be larger and heavier than folding or Swiss Army knives, so so are usually carried on a sheath on a belt. The Leatherman Juice S2, Blast or Fuse are good choices in your price range. The Leatherman Skeltool is also very nice, being relatively compact and light while including a one-handed, locking knife blade, but it lacks scissors.

If you want to get the best KNIFE for your money, go with a folding pocketknife such as Spyderco, Kershaw, Ontario, Benchmade, etc. With these Knives your dollars go towards the blade and not other tools you might not need.

If you want the best CAMP TOOL for your money, then you need to decide between a Swiss Army Knife or a Multi-Tool. My preferences favor the Swiss Army Knife as it is lighter, more compact, and thus easier to carry on the trails. In fact, I carry my Victorinox Swiss Army Compact with me all the time, not just while camping.
