People have mentioned the obvious ones -- measuring cups, measuring spoons, plates, knives, etc. Of course you're also going to need pots and pans; usually two frying pans (one big and one smaller) and maybe three pots (one small one, one bigger one, and maybe one REALLY big one for if you're making a LOT of soup) would be enough.

I would also add an immersion blender, but try to find one that has different attachments -- that can elminate the need for a lot of other things. Mine has an attachment that also makes it work as a food processor and one that has a whisk; so it can puree soup, but can ALSO make whipped cream really fast. LOVE IT.
References :
measuring spoons, measuring cups (both metal and glass) 8" chef knife or a santoku knife. plastic cutting board, colander, kitchen scale.wood spoons, better quality cookware. don't buy one of those huge sets with lots of pans. all you need are 10 or 12" fry pan, 3 or 4qt sauce pan and a stock pot. I prefer all clad if i have to pick. build your pan inventory over time. kosher salt, pepper grinder. those the things I use on a regular basis as basics. the key with kitchen gadgets is that they have to multi task. don't buy something that only does one thing. better to have tools that work on multiple things.
References :
#1 must is my Santoku knife.
I have to agree with the pampered chef can opener also.
Also my cast iron cookware.(death to teflon) Everthing tastes better from cast iron.
My wooden spoons and spatulas.
References :
Cooking professionally for 17 years.

My must-have list includes:

Spice/coffee grinder - for grinding spices, dried mushrooms, flax seed or any other small, dried item
An immersion blender - how can one possibly make Leek and Potato Soup without one?
A refillable oil spray bottle - goodbye old-fashioned basting brush!
Crockpot - supper is ready the minute you get home. Need I say more.
Storage containers that can go straight from the freezer to the microwave
A small holed grater for ginger root - fresh ginger green tea anyone? Not to mention garlic-ginger stirfry and ginger noodle soup.
And last, but definately not least, a lever-action corkscrew - whether the wine goes in the food or in the cook, no kitchen should be without one of these.
References :
Here are some kitchen things that I use a lot:

Crockpot
Microwave
Pampered Chef can opener
Silicone spatulas, spoons, utensils
Bakeware
Measuring cups, mixing bowls
Lock n' Lock storage containers
Immersion blender (for making a quick smoothie or blending batter, or tomato soup)
A good set of knives (steak, bread, utility, paring, chef, filet)
Good set of cookware (would you consider that a gadget?)

That's all I can think of right now. Good luck. :-)
References :
Microwave, toaster oven, can opener (StarFrit's that slices the rim leaving a non-sharp lid and can), large glass measuring cup, silicone spoonula, single serve storage containers that can go in the microwave/freezer/fridge.

Think service for 4 - that'll be plenty as you can always pick up paper/plastic plates for a pizza party, etc.
Dishes? Corelle all the way (believe me, if I had it to do over again ...).
Decent cutlery.
Wiltshire knives (the kind with the sharpening sleeve).
Glasses - get the cheapest.

*Check out your local Goodwill/Salvation Army/St. Vincent - you can get starter stuff CHEAP.
